Beginning with analysis of a snapshot of those held in custody on a single day in 2013, the MCC has been tracking the inmate population of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office for the past several years. These reports show fluctuations in the numbers of inmates over time while also providing detailed analyses of the reasons inmates are held in custody. These inmate population analyses began in response to questions about who is held in jail and the reasons why inmates are held in jail amidst community debate over the jail space needed for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.
