New Orleans Police Department officers were called out to a hotel in New Orleans East on Sunday to investigate reports of shots fired.
When they arrived at the Siegel Select, once known as Motel 6 at 12330 Interstate 10 Service Road, officers said two gunshot wound victims were located on the scene. One of the victims was a 15-year-old girl, who died at the hospital. The other person shot was an 11-year-old boy; he is currently in stable condition.
WDSU revisited the complex that operates as a hotel and apartment for those who want to stay for an extended period of time. Management would not let us on the property, but those who live in the area said the girl and boy were siblings. They also told WDSU that the family of the teens live at the complex.
A few people were inside and around the complex when the shots were fired and heard the aftermath.
At this time, we do not know what led to the shooting. We also do not know if any arrests were made.
The Metropolitan Crime Commission reports that while shootings and homicides are down across the city compared to 2022, juvenile shootings and homicides are up by about 29% from last year.
Anyone with information that can help in the investigation is being urged to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
